At Watermelon Swim, our mission is simple but deeply meaningful: to grow a community of safer swimmers while reducing the risks in and around water. It’s a mission that doesn’t happen overnight, just like your little melon’s swim journey.
When families begin lessons with us, a common question we hear is: “How long until my child learns to swim?” or “Do we really need to complete all the levels?”
Let’s unpack what it really means to learn to swim level 6 and why completing our program through Level 6 is essential to your child becoming a confident, competent, and safer swimmer.
What Does It Actually Mean to Learn to Swim?
For many parents, the definition of learning to swim can vary. At Watermelon Swim, we work to grow competent swimmers. A competent swimmer is one who can move freely, unassisted, throughout a pool or other water environment. Specifically, a competent Watermelon Swim student can:
- Independently return to the wall after falling in
- Have proper form while swimming on their front and can roll onto their back to rest and breathe
- Consistently establish and maintain a floating position
- Maintain forward swim progress and breathing patterns in stressful situations
- Swim extended distances on front and back with applicable breathing based on the stroke performed
- Swim underwater short distances with confidence
- Tread water and stay calm in deeper conditions
These are life-saving skills, especially here in Florida, where we’re surrounded by pools, lakes, and beaches all year long.
And here’s the truth: your child won’t reliably have these skills until they complete Level 6.
Why Level 6 Is the Goal
Our Learn-to-Swim levels (1 through 6) are designed to follow your child’s physical development and build progressively toward survival, water safety, and swimming independence. By the time your child graduates Level 6, they’ll have mastered the core survival, safety, and complete swim lessons that we believe every Florida child should have.
Here’s what a Level 6 graduate can do:
- Kick in streamline on front with side breathing for 10 yds
- Swim Freestyle with side breathing for 10 yds
- Swim Beginner backstroke for 10 yds
- Tread water for 1 full minute
- Swim underwater for 10 yds
- Survival floats for 1 full minute – this face-down float allows a swimmer to rest safely in rough water. The swimmer keeps their body afloat while lifting their head to breathe as needed, maintaining a stable floating position.
- Complete an independent front somersault – this teaches breath control and re-establishing body orientation in the water. Also, it’s fun!
In short: Level 6 = Peace of mind for parents, and life-saving skills for your child.
Watermelon Swim encourages tracking student progress using our Sticker Book program, keeping your little melon motivated and helping them and you see just how far they’ve come! Kids love watching their progress and earning new stickers as they master each milestone on the way to becoming a confident swimmer.
What Happens After Level 6?
If your child has completed Level 6, congratulations! They are well on their way to becoming not just safer, but strong, efficient swimmers.
But the journey doesn’t have to stop there.
Our advanced levels focus on refining the four competitive strokes, improving endurance, and preparing swimmers for lifelong aquatic recreation and enjoyment. Whether your child is training for the swim team or just continuing to build strength and skill, the upper levels are a valuable continuation of everything they’ve learned.
