Boating Safety Tips for Kids: A Guide to Staying Safer on the Water This Summer
Summer is in full swing here in Florida, and that means many of our Melon Families are heading out for fun in the sun! With the heat cranked up, most outdoor activities involve water in some way, making boating, swimming, and water sports a top pastime for families across the state.
Did you know that Florida is recognized as the “Boating Capital of the World”? With over a million registered recreational vessels—and Hillsborough County ranking in the top five for boat registrations—boating safety is more important than ever here in Tampa Bay.
At Watermelon Swim, water safety is always top of mind. While our swim lessons in Lutz consistently teach and reinforce core safety skills, boating introduces unique risks that need to be addressed before you hit the water with your kids. Here are our top boating safety tips every Florida family should follow before heading out.
Top Boating Safety Tips for Kids and Families in Florida
1. Always Wear a Life Jacket
Everyone on board should wear a brightly colored, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while the boat is in motion. While life jackets are required for every passenger, we recommend wearing them at all times, especially for children. Make sure each child wears a properly fitting life jacket that is appropriate for their weight and age
2. Check the Weather Before Boating
Florida’s weather can change quickly, potentially creating dangerous waves or lightning hazards. Always check the radar and marine forecast before heading out, and stay alert for signs of storms or rough water while boating with your family.
3. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
Many boating accidents are caused by collisions that could have been avoided. Stay within marked channels, observe no-wake zones, and minimize distractions while operating your boat. Also, make sure to learn and follow basic navigational skills.
4. Inspect Your Safety Equipment
Make sure your boat has the required number of life jackets, plus a whistle or horn, navigation lights, a fire extinguisher, flares, and an emergency locator beacon as recommended by FWC.
5. Prepare for the Heat
Bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and use protective clothing for your kids. Keep a change of clothes and a first aid kit onboard to handle minor issues quickly.
6. File a Float Plan
Before you leave, share a float plan with a trusted friend or family member outlining where you’re going, who is onboard, and when you plan to return. This is critical in case of an emergency. Download a float plan here.
How Watermelon Swim’s Safety Rules Help with Boating Safety for Kids
Our Water Safety Rules aren’t just for the pool—they’re essential on boats, at the beach, and anywhere water fun happens! Whether you’re cruising through Tampa Bay or splashing in the backyard, these rules help keep your kids safer on and around the water.
And don’t forget—formal swim lessons add an extra layer of protection, reducing the risk of drowning by up to 88%. A little preparation can go a long way toward a safer summer.
Never Swim or Boat Alone
Active adult supervision is non-negotiable. Always have an adult present when your child is swimming off the side of the boat or riding along.
Look Before You Jump, Dive, or Drive
Before jumping into the water, ensure it is deep enough and clear of obstacles. Captains should stay alert and avoid distractions while navigating to prevent accidents.
Help, Don’t Jump In
If someone falls overboard, resist the urge to jump in after them. Instead, use a life ring or throw a flotation device to help while staying safe.
Wear a Life Jacket
We practice wearing life jackets during swim lessons, so kids feel confident in them. Whether worn at all times or kept within easy reach, life jackets are the #1 boating safety tip for kids.
