Welcome! Thank you for taking the first big step towards water safety by enrolling your child in swim lessons with us. We’re so happy that you and your little melon are joining the Watermelon Swim family.
Water safety is the basis of everything we do. Through consistent practice, swimmers learn important, life-saving skills like floating independently, turning to find the wall, and kicking efficiently, all while building confidence in the pool. We’re thrilled to help your child become a safer swimmer.
Where Do I Check In?
When you come in on your first day, introduce yourself to Team Melon at the front desk and be sure to let us know that it’s your first day. If it’s your first time at the facility, one of our team members will happily give you a tour so you know your way around and answer any questions you may have!
To check in your little melon for lessons, a team member will direct you to the iPad on the counter. You can just type in your phone number, tap ‘check in’ and you’re all set!
If you forget to check in, don’t worry, you can let the front desk know, and they’ll help you out.
What if I Need to Purchase a Swim Diaper?
If needing to purchase a Splash About Happy Nappy Duo diaper from our front desk, it’s best to arrive 15-20 minutes early on your first day to ensure plenty of time to find the right fit. These diapers are supposed to be snug, so it may take a few minutes to get it on for the first time, especially for wiggly melons.
Remember, we don’t allow disposable swim diapers to help keep our pools clean and keep our classes running without interruption.
What if My Child is Scared to Go in the Pool?
It’s completely normal for young children who are new to the water to feel nervous or unsure about getting in the pool. At Watermelon Swim, we understand that every child adjusts at their own pace, and some may need a little extra time to feel comfortable with a new routine, especially if they’re not used to being separated from their caregiver. In our experience, we see that it takes three to six weeks of lessons to really settle in. This settlement period gives students time to bond with their instructor and warm up to the new environment. During this time, plenty of encouragement, consistency, and trust in our instructors can make a big difference.
While those big emotions can feel overwhelming at first, Team Melon uses gentle and fun teaching methods with a lot of praise and positive reinforcement. Before long, your child will start to arrive at Watermelon Swim excited, confident, and ready to jump right in!
What Should I Bring?
It’s important to bring a towel for after class, and if your child isn’t already in their suit when you get here, make sure to bring it with you. Likewise, if your child is arriving in their swimsuit, be sure to bring a change of clothes for after class so you and your little melon can have a dry and comfortable drive home.
If you happen to forget any of these items, don’t worry, Slyce’s Pro Swim Shop has everything you need to have a successful lesson, from swimsuits and towels, to treats for afterwards.
Can My Swimmer Wear Goggles to Class?
We ask that children leave their goggles at home. At Watermelon Swim, we want all our students to understand how water feels on their entire face. Most emergencies happen when a child isn’t expected to be in the pool. It’s important to practice essential water safety skills without goggles first, so children can be prepared later.
Once your swimmer moves up to Level 5, goggles may be worn to class.
Can My Child Start with Floaties?
At Watermelon Swim, we do not allow floaties or water wings in our lessons. Floaties inhibit actual process from being made, and they give children a false sense of confidence in their swimming abilities.
Floaties and water wings are also unreliable; wings can be slipped off, even by the littlest melons. Inflatable flotation devices can pop without warning.
