It’s Water Safety Week! At Watermelon Swim, one of our biggest goals is to equip families with the knowledge they need to feel confident and capable around water.

With pools, lakes, and beaches calling our names, it’s important to understand how to stay safer in every setting, whether you’re relaxing at the neighborhood pool or heading out for a day on the boat. A little preparation goes a long way in helping everyone enjoy the water with peace of mind.

Here are some of Watermelon Swim’s top tips for staying safer around water:

Bright Swimsuit Colors

Swimsuit color is about more than just style, it’s safety!

Bright, neon colors have higher visibility. These colors stand out and are easy to see even under the surface.

Dull, dark, neutral colors have lower visibility. These colors will blend in with the color of the water, especially in the ocean or the lake, making it harder to spot your little melon.

Great choices are hot pink, neon yellow & orange, and lime green.

Not-so-great choices are black & gray, shades of blue, and muted patterns.

Choose bold, bright colors for safer swims!

Boating Safety Guidelines

Nothing beats a sunny day on the boat. Here are some essential tips so the good times can keep rolling when you and your family take to the water:

  • Wear a life jacket. Brightly colored, Coast Guard-approved, properly fitted, and worn at all times
  • Check the weather. Review radar & forecasts before heading out and stay alert for changes
  • Stay aware. Follow channels, respect no-wake zones, and avoid distractions
  • Check safety gear. Check the quality of your life jackets, horn/whistle, lights, fire extinguisher, and more before heading out
  • Prep for heat. Bring water, sunscreen, hats, and extra clothes
  • Share a float plan. Let someone know your plans including where you plan to go and what time you intend to get back

Assign an Adult to Be the Water Watcher

When everyone is watching, no one is actively watching. The water watcher should stay sober and stay off their phone so their full attention can be on the swimmers. This person should be keeping track of who’s entering and exiting the water, frequently doing a head count so they know where everyone is.

Whether you’re anchored at a sandbar or relaxing by the backyard pool, this small step can go a long way.

Consistent, Continuous Swim Lessons

One of the most impactful ways to keep your child safer around water is through swim lessons. Learning to swim builds not only essential life-saving skills, but also confidence and comfort in the water.

Consistent, ongoing lessons make a real difference, reducing the risk of drowning by 88%. That’s a powerful reason to prioritize swim education for your family.

There’s no need to wait, because when it comes to water safety, the best time to begin is now.

Making Water Safety a Way of Life

Water safety is a habit that grows with practice, awareness, and the right support. Every step you take, from choosing brighter swimsuits to staying prepared on the boat, helps create a safer environment for your family.
