Why teach my child to swim?

Teaching children Swim skills early in life, including what to do if they unexpectedly fall into the water, can help reduce accidents and give your child valuable knowledge of how to stay safe in the water.

When your child takes swim lessons, they reap benefits beyond water skills and safety. According to a study conducted by Griffith University, children who took swim lessons before the age of 5 tended to be more physically, socially, and intellectually advanced than their peers who did not.

Swimming is excellent exercise, too. Regular swimming improves your child’s cardiovascular capabilities and strengthens all the muscle groups in the body. It’s also low-impact and better for the joints, no matter how old you are.

If you’re looking for locally owned and operated swim schools in Brooksville, FL, look no further than Watermelon Swim. We’re your friends and neighbors, and it’s common to see Team Melon giving back and participating in community enrichment events.

With 40+ years of experience, training, and water safety focus, Watermelon Swim has earned its reputation as a top-tier swim lesson facility. Every Watermelon Swim facility is year-round, indoors, privately owned, and operated – no renting space at a gym. We hold swim lessons, rain or shine!

Team Melon swim instructors are certified in CPR, first aid, lifeguarding, and water safety instruction. We emphasize water safety and survival, including accident prevention and emergency responses.

Water safety techniques and swim skills should become second nature to your child. Each class builds on the skills taught in the one before, giving your child a solid foundation to grow. The lifesaving skills your child needs in an emergency develop with the consistency and repetition we teach.

Our instructors are certified and selected through a rigorous screening process. Our swim instructors and support staff can access continuing education resources through the United States Swim School Association. We keep our skills sharp by having each instructor attend workshops throughout the year. We also require instructors who teach classes for swimmers with disabilities to attend continuing education.

Program Overview – Brooksville

All Watermelon Swim classes have a low student-to-instructor ratio, so each student receives plenty of personalized attention. Each class teaches skills to build on skills taught in the class before, giving your child the knowledge they need to succeed and progress safely.

Classes are offered year-round, starting with Water Babies for infants 0-6 months. The Brooksville location offers Learn to Swim classes from levels 1-6, then more advanced classes for older children.

We also offer private lessons, swim team training, and classes for swimmers with disabilities (adults-only classes and children-only classes).

The Basics

We ask plenty of questions to get to know your swimmer. Most of our students start with Level 1 unless their age is most appropriate for Water Babies or Parent & Tot classes. Each swim level is different, so we must determine which skills your child has mastered before placing them in a class. We ensure your child is safer and set up for success.

Once we place your child in a class, they will be closely supervised by their instructor, managers, and Deck Supervisors. We watch your child’s progress to ensure they’re challenged appropriately. Once they’ve mastered all skills at their current level, they will level up to the next level!

Most parents want to know how fast their child will learn to swim or when they’ll reach the next level. Children learn at different rates; a skill that is simple for one to master may be a challenge for their friend, and vice versa.

Learning swim skills isn’t a race. Instead, we focus on mastering each skill, overall competency in the water, and the safety and comfort of all Watermelon Swim swimmers.

Meet Team Melon! Each of our instructors undergoes specialized training to teach swim techniques and water safety that include:

  • 100 hours of training (both in and out of the water)
  • CPR
  • First aid
  • Water safety instruction
  • Lifeguarding
  • At least three continuing educational courses each year

We focus on helping each swimmer reach their full potential in a fun, safer environment.
