Why indoor swimming is perfect for the fall
When you’re the parent of a baby, toddler, or preschooler, you have to be a little more creative in finding socialization opportunities.
While Watermelon Swim classes are a fantastic way to enhance safety and development, they also offer a wonderful social environment that’s just as important. But you might wonder—when is the right time to start?
How do swimming lessons promote socialization?
One question we often receive is, “Is my child old enough for swimming lessons?” The answer? Yes!
The American Association of Pediatrics recommends that children as young as 1 begin formal swimming lessons to reduce their drowning risk. The earlier you introduce your child to the water, the more comfortable they become. With that comfort comes a lower risk of drowning.
We waste no time getting your child comfortable in the water at Watermelon Swim. We offer classes for infants younger than one (as soon as the umbilical cord falls off).
Our child-focused swimming lessons incorporate fun into learning. We believe children learn best through play. Your child will learn teamwork and how to encourage their swim classmates to master new skills successfully.
We foster a sense of friendly competition in our classes, including races and team games. The common thread in all our swimming lessons is how to have fun in the water safely and how to look after your swimming buddies.
The safety skills and awareness in the water your child learns when they’re young build a strong foundation. When children can demonstrate their proficiency in the water, they can be trusted to swim without supervision.
The importance of fun for early childhood socialization
At Watermelon Swim, children learn how to take turns and listen when the instructor introduces new skills.
They learn basic social concepts like setting personal boundaries, sharing, and problem-solving as they interact with other children their age. We reinforce these skills with our play-based swim lessons.
The American Red Cross lists three critical skills for water safety: water smarts, swim skills, and helping others. The “helping others” part begins with socialization in the water at a young age. We teach our youngest swimmers to be aware of others in the pool and the difference between fun and dangerous horseplay.
Year-round swimming at Watermelon Swim
Did you know that participating in formal swim lessons is associated with an 88% reduction in drowning risk for children aged 1 to 4? Our water-safer emphasis is the cornerstone of every Watermelon Swim class, from babies to seniors.
Each of our five Tampa-area Watermelon Swim locations is indoors, so your child’s class will be held rain or shine. Florida winters are pleasant and mild, but small children getting in and out of the water outdoors may be too chilly to have a good time.
We keep our pools at an even temperature and maintain a clean, sanitary pool deck and observational space. Our changing rooms ensure your little one doesn’t have to brave cool winter days in a wet swimsuit.
Watermelon Swim classes for young children
In our Water Babies classes, children as young as 6 months can start a lifelong love of the water. Each class is small, pairing baby with parent or caregiver, introducing your child to the water, and getting them comfortable.
Parent-Tot 1 & 2 are for older babies and toddlers, from 6 months to 2 years. These classes are also small, and caregivers are in the water with their children. We introduce basic swimming techniques, breath control, and buoyancy, preparing your child for Learn to Swim.
Watermelon Swim Learn-to-Swim classes are for children 2 to 6 years old, grouped by developmental ability and experience in the water. We teach basic swimming strokes, mastering each skill without water wings or a floatie before “graduating” to the next level.
We teach floating in every class, our #1 water safety skill. Floating requires ZERO effort and can help your child remain calm until help arrives.
